Blood Collection

Blood Collection

Collection of a blood sample to analyze blood count, lipids, glucose, and organ function, performed by a registered nurse

Benefits of This Test

  • Detect early signs of disease such as diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, liver disease, and anemia
  • Assess disease risk to enable timely behavioral changes or prevention
  • Monitor treatment of chronic conditions and adjust medication appropriately
  • Assess nutritional status, including vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Plan personalized health recommendations for nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle

Testing Procedure

1. Confirm Identity

Provide your name to staff to confirm your information before the blood draw

2. Sample Collection

A registered nurse collects the sample, using your non-dominant arm when possible

3. Apply Pressure

Fold your arm at the draw site for 3–5 minutes; avoid massaging the area

What to do during blood collection

  • We recommend offering your non-dominant arm to staff for the draw
  • After the draw, press the site for 1-2 minutes to help stop bleeding. Don't bend your arm, massage the area, or strain that arm, as this can cause blood to leak under the skin and bruise
  • If you're afraid of needles or feel faint or your heart races, tell staff before the draw
