Lung Function Test

Lung Function Test

Lung Function Tests, commonly known as Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs) or often referred to simply as Spirometry, are crucial assessments that evaluate the efficiency of your lungs and airways. They help doctors understand how well your lungs take in and expel air, as well as their ability to exchange gases.

Benefits of Lung Function Testing

This test plays a vital role in maintaining your respiratory health, with key benefits including:

  • Screening and Diagnosing Respiratory Diseases: It is an effective method for detecting and diagnosing various lung conditions in their early stages, such as Asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Emphysema, or occupational lung diseases, even before you start experiencing symptoms.

  • Assessing Disease Severity: For individuals already diagnosed with a lung condition, PFTs help doctors assess the severity of the disease to plan appropriate treatment.

  • Monitoring Treatment Effectiveness: It allows doctors to track how well treatments for lung conditions, such as bronchodilators or pulmonary rehabilitation, are working.

  • Evaluating Impact of Risk Factors: It can indicate how much exposure to pollutants like PM2.5 dust, cigarette smoke, or workplace chemicals has affected your lungs.

  • Pre-Surgical Lung Assessment: In some cases, doctors may order PFTs to evaluate whether your lungs are healthy enough to withstand surgery.

  • Identifying Lung Decline Before Symptoms Appear: Test results can indicate a decline in lung function proactively, before symptoms like shortness of breath or difficulty breathing become apparent.
